Description

Observed on 24 September 2016 at the Okie-Tex Star Party with a 12” Skywatcher Dobsonian: My best view of this diffuse globular cluster was at 87x. At 150x it was too dim. Using averted vision, I could see some faint detail though I would not have called this object a globular cluster based on my observation. It looks more like an open cluster.

NGC 6144 is close to Antares (at the lower right corner of the image) and is embedded in the orange nebulosity that surrounds Antares. It has a very low core stellar density.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: XI
Distance: 29,032 LY
Type: Hub Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Right above the center of the Milky Way.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
